This is a lament with a searing air. t’s about a woman who became a wife, a widow and a maiden all in one day after her husband drowned while taking the priest home in a curragh. I love this lament for its honest description of death. ‘The sea worms have your eyes, and the crabs have your mouth’. The song is associated with both Mayo and Miltown Malbay in Co Clare, it was common historically for laments to be reused and for lyrics to be changed to respond to different tragedies.
